Joyful Joyful

The children at ATS had a lovely surprise when a missionary from JOYFUL (Japanese Outreach Youth Foundation for Underprivileged Learners) visited the orphanage in person to see what work could be done to aid them. JOYFUL is an organization based in Tokyo that supports orphanages in Japan as well as the Philippines, and has been aiding ATS recently with organized activities and games, as well as donations of items such as raincoats, umbrellas and toiletries.

After some discussion over dinner with the Pastors about schooling, activities, requirements, and their daily life, it was decided that JOYFUL would fund a project to build a new set of stairs.

The original staircase that led to the second-story living quarters was old and unstable, making it impossible for anyone to live on the top floor; the children were frightened of using it.

The old staircase was taken down, and a new one was made and placed on the other side of the building (so that it would be closer to the toilet block). This also meant that a new door had to be constructed. The new staircase was handmade with great attention to detail. The children stare in wonder at the beautifully carved wood, and admire how ‘shiny’ it is.

The children are still afraid to tread on the staircase, but for a completely different reason: “It’s too beautiful!”
